Old Reynella

Contemporary Suburb with Wine Country Charm

It’s hard to believe that this charming outer-suburb can offer so much history alongside such modern conveniences.

Located an easy 20 minute drive from Adelaide’s CBD and just 5 kilometres from the coast, Old Reynella is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the many conveniences and attractions that exist within the area. And with the Fleurieu Peninsula’s world-class wineries and foodie culture mere minutes away, there is so much to discover.

Situated at the gateway to the McLaren Vale wine region, Old Reynella takes its name from a pioneer of this very industry - John Reynell. Arriving in 1838, John acquired the land on which he would build a winery and plant South Australia’s first commercial vineyards.

By 1854, word had spread about this picturesque district, and living here became a dream for many. To meet demand, 40 acres of private land was allocated for housing and the town of Reynella was born. A steam mill, school, post office and hotel were quickly built to service the new residents.

Today, John Reynell’s original winery, with its heritage listed cellar (Australia’s oldest working example) and refurbished homestead, still sits at the heart of the suburb as a reminder of the area’s rich history

And other historical landmarks are everywhere. You can enjoy a cold beer at The Crown Inn Hotel which has held a continual license since 1853, while the original distillery, once responsible for producing Australia’s best brandy, now hosts St Francis Winery - a beautiful function centre full of old-world charm.

Lovingly restored houses, some dating back to the 1800s, intermingle with contemporary homes to create a delightful, character-filled streetscape, and the memorial park provides both a glimpse into the history of the area and the perfect sanctuary to sit and reflect.

Take a stroll along the old railway line that has been transformed into a walking track, linking up with the popular Coast to Vines Trail. Or meander down the main street, reminiscent of a quiet country town and lined with quaint specialty shopscafés, restaurants and practical modern amenities.

The welcoming community centres and sports hubs are also a wonderful way to get to know the locals.

Its proximity to the Southern Expressway and Main South Road ensures that public transport is never a hassle and getting to major shopping hubs nearby takes no time at all. And for those who don’t like to stray too far from the beachyou can be relaxing on the sand in under 15 minutes.

Although defined by history, Old Reynella offers a contemporary lifestyle for those that live and work here. Stop by for a visit sometime - you’ll be glad you did.
