Ways To Help Make Moving House Easy
6 moving and packing tips for a seamless shift!
Moving house can be a mammoth task.
And whether it’s your first move or your tenth, it can be hard to stay organised and keep things under control.
There are so many things to consider, from packing and decluttering to making sure everything is in order.
But there are things you can do to ensure your move is smooth and stress-free.
Here we share our top six tips to help make your next move a breeze.
Start Planning Early.
It goes without saying that the earlier you start planning, the smoother your move will be.
So don't wait until the last minute to start getting organised!
Aim to give yourself a good 5 or 6 weeks to prepare.
Work out where you’re going to get all your packing materials from - boxes, bubble wrap and brown paper - and order them if necessary.
Book a skip bin if you’ve got a lot of accumulated junk, create an inventory of all your stuff, and write a list of all the things you’ll have to update, like your driver’s licence, car rego, mail redirection and health records.
Request time off work if you think it’ll take longer than a weekend, and book in your final gas and electricity meter readings for just before you leave. And don’t forget to arrange any reconnections at your new house!
Organise Packing Boxes & Start Filling Them.
As soon as your packing materials arrive, start filling them up.
The best way to start is by placing a few boxes in each room, and labelling them so you’ll know exactly where to put them when you get to your new address. Anything that makes unpacking easier, right?
Another handy tip is to keep at least one box aside to create a ‘Moving Day Survival Pack’ that contains drinks, snacks, scissors, tape and basic cleaning items like cloths, hand soap and Spray’n’Wipe.
That way, you won’t accidentally pack these essentials, and they’ll be on hand when you need them!
Declutter as You Go.
While moving house can be a pain in the proverbial, it’s actually an excellent opportunity to get rid of items you no longer need or want!
Work through room by room, including the garage and garden sheds.
Put items into four categories - keep, store, donate and throw out.
Make use of that skip bin you booked, and pencil in a trip to the Goodwill store once you’re all done.
Not only will this make packing easier, you’ll be less stressed and it will help you start fresh in your new home.
Plus, decluttering will save you loads of time by not having to pack and move items that are no longer useful.
Take Photos of Every Set Up.
Before you start pulling apart furniture and unplugging electronics, make sure you take photos of every setup.
That way, when you get to your new home, you’ll have a visual to remind you how everything was arranged - minus the stress!
And don’t forget the controllers and cords and anything else appliance-related. Label them all so you know which ones go with what, and keep them all in the same box so they they’re not lost during the move.
Prepare For Your First Night.
Just like the moving day survival pack, this is forward thinking at its best.
After a gruelling day of moving house, the last thing you want to think about is where to find the everyday essentials like soap, toilet paper and toothpaste.
So make a ‘First Night Bundle’ that will save you from rummaging through a thousand boxes late at night when you're zonked and just want to relax.
What goes in it? Anything you think you and your family will need on night one in your new home!
Bed linen, towels, pillows, a change of clothes and toiletries - even pet food and cereal. Remember to pop all your important medication in there too.
Don’t Need the Hassle? Hire the Experts!
If you're too busy to do it yourself, or simply don’t want to, why not leave some (or all) of your move to the experts?
Hiring professional removalists and cleaners can be a serious game changer.
Not only will it make your life oh-so-much easier, it will alleviate stress and ensure a smooth transition into your new home.
Because they do it every day, they’ll be super-efficient and make sure everything is done properly.
So if you want to take the headache out of moving day, go ahead and splash out on some help.
Trust us, it’s worth every cent.
Moving house can definitely be hectic. But it doesn’t need to be stressful.
With a little planning and forethought, there are plenty of ways to make your move easier, quicker and more enjoyable.
Remember - if you simply plan, declutter, label and pack - and don't forget your ‘first night bundle’ - you'll be well on your way to enjoying a seriously smooth move!
